What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. Its antibacterial spectrum is similar to that of norfloxacin, but it exhibits 2 to 10 times stronger antibacterial activity, making it one of the most potent fluoroquinolone antibiotics in terms of in vitro efficacy.
What is the Physicochemical Properties of Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a pale yellow crystalline powder with a bitter taste and is poorly soluble in water. Its hydrochloride or lactate salts, commonly used in clinical practice, appear as white or slightly yellow crystalline powders and are readily soluble in water.

Uses
What is Ciprofloxacin used for?
Ciprofloxacin is rapidly but incompletely absorbed after oral administration. It is primarily used to treat systemic infections, respiratory, digestive, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria, as well as mycoplasmosis and mixed infections involving mycoplasma and bacteria.
Dosage
How much Ciprofloxacin should be given to an animal?
Medicated drinking: 25–50 mg per liter of water for poultry.
Oral administration:
Poultry: 5–10 mg per kg body weight, twice daily.
Livestock: 2.5–5 mg per kg body weight, twice daily.
Fish: 10–15 mg per kg body weight, for 5–7 days.
Intravenous/Intramuscular injection:
Poultry: 5 mg per kg body weight, twice daily.
Livestock: 2.5 mg per kg body weight, twice daily.
Side Effects
What are the potential side effects of Ciprofloxacin in different animal species?
(1) It may cause cartilage deformation in young animals, impair bone development, and lead to lameness and pain.
(2) Adverse effects on the digestive system include vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea.
(3) Cutaneous reactions may include erythema, pruritus, urticaria, and photosensitivity.
(4) Allergic reactions, ataxia, and seizures have been occasionally observed in dogs and cats.
What are the common dosage forms of Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Soluble Powder: 100g contains 2g, 2.5g, or 5g.
Tablets: 0.25g or 0.5g per tablet.
Capsules: 0.1g per capsule.
Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Injection: 2mL containing 40mg; 100mL containing 2g or 2.5g.
Ciprofloxacin Lactate Injection: 2mL containing 50mg; 100mL containing 2g.
What are the Precautions of Ciprofloxacin?
(1) Chickens, especially chicks, are highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin injection and are prone to fatal intoxication. Strict dosage control is essential when administering the injection to chickens.
(2) Withdrawal periods:
Ciprofloxacin Lactate Soluble Powder: 8 days for poultry; prohibited for laying hens.
Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Soluble Powder: 28 days for chickens; prohibited for laying hens.
Ciprofloxacin Lactate Injection: 14 days for cattle; 10 days for pigs; 28 days for poultry; milk discard period is 84 hours.
