Research and practical applications showed that high concentrations of zinc oxide(1500-2250ppm, based on zinc)addition in diets can effectively reduce the cases of weaned piglets diarrhea and thereby promote the growth of piglets. Zinc exerts its function in a molecular form other than its ionic form.

The main mechanism of this can be summarized as follows:

(1) zinc oxide can maintain the integrity of the intestinal cells by astringing the damaged intestinal epithelial cell; (2)zinc oxide inhibits the adhesion of bacteria to the intestinal mucosa and prevents the damage to intestinal mucosa cells and in turn the intestinal tract;(where zinc oxide binds with peptidoglycan, the main component of the cell wall of E.coli., changes the physiological function of the cell wall, makes the bacteria more sensitive to the osmotic pressure, and eventually lead to breakdown and death of the bacterial.)

(3)zinc oxide improves gastrointestinal micro-ecological balance and refines the intestinal microenvironment.
