Pharmacological Action
This product is an important coenzyme component for the synthesis of nucleotides. It participates in methyl transfer and folate metabolism in the body, promoting the conversion of 5‑methyltetrahydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate. Deficiency may lead to folate deficiency and consequently impair DNA synthesis, affecting the development and maturation of red blood cells. This product also promotes the conversion of methylmalonic acid to succinic acid, which is involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. This action is related to the synthesis of myelin lipids in nerves and the maintenance of functional integrity of myelinated nerve fibres. The neurological damage seen in vitamin B₁₂ deficiency may be associated with this process.
Vitamin B₁₂ binds to α‑ and β‑globulins in the blood and is transported to various tissues throughout the body, with the largest amount distributed in the liver. Vitamin B₁₂ is excreted mainly in the urine and bile.
When vitamin B₁₂ is deficient, the growth and development of cells and tissues in the body are inhibited. The reduction in red blood cell production is particularly pronounced and may cause pernicious anaemia in animals. In addition, other tissue metabolic disturbances, such as nervous system damage, may also occur.
Action and Use
Water‑soluble vitamin. Used for anaemia caused by vitamin B₁₂ deficiency, retarded growth in young animals, etc.
Dosage and Administration
Intramuscular injection: single dose - horses, cattle 20–40 ml; sheep, pigs 6–8 ml; dogs, cats 2 ml.
Adverse Reactions
Intramuscular injection may occasionally cause skin rash, pruritus, diarrhoea, and allergic asthma.
Precautions
When used for the prevention and treatment of megaloblastic anaemia, this product combined with folic acid can achieve better results.
