Its anthelmintic action is mediated by stimulating the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from presynaptic neurons, which opens GABA-gated chloride channels. The influx of chloride ions reduces membrane resistance, causing a slight depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane potential and disrupting neuromuscular signal transmission. This leads to paralysis and subsequent death or expulsion of the parasites.
