What is Albendazole?
Albendazole is currently the most widely used anthelmintic drug with high efficiency, broad spectrum and low toxicity. Albendazole can repel adults and larvae of nematodes, tapeworms and flukes (except schistosomiasis) in livestock and poultry. Albendazole also has a suppressive effect on eggs.

Uses
What is Albendazole used for?
The anthelmintic mechanism of albendazole is to interfere with the energy metabolism of the insect body. Albendazole is mainly used for nematodesis, taeniasis and trematodes in livestock and poultry, such as paraascariasis and strongylosis in horses, Trichostrongylus, esophageal stoma, Fasciola hepatica and Monitzine tapeworm in cattle, capillaria and filariasis, avian flagellates and taeniasis in dogs and cats, as well as internal helminth diseases in sheep, goats and pigs.
What are the pharmacokinetic properties of albendazole?
The absorption degree of albendazole after oral administration is higher than that of other benzimidazole drugs. The metabolites of this product detected in urine within 9 days are about 47% of the oral dose. This product has a strong first-pass effect. It is generally difficult to detect the original drug in the blood. The active metabolites (albendazole sulfone and albendazole sulfoxide) in the blood can reach the peak drug concentration 20 hours after administration.
Dosage
How much Albendazole should be given to an animal?
Horses & Pigs: 10–20 mg/kg body weight
Cattle & Sheep: 10–15 mg/kg body weight
Rabbits (Trial Dose): 15–30 mg/kg body weight
Dogs: 25–50 mg/kg body weight
Poultry: 10–20 mg/kg body weight
Fish: 20 mg/kg body weight
Frequency: Twice daily
Side Effects
What are the potential side effects of albendazole in different animal species?
(1) There are no obvious adverse reactions in cattle and sheep when taking the Albendazole at the recommended dose. Cattle are given 4.5 times the recommended dose and there are no obvious adverse reactions. However, doses of 300mg/kg and 200mg/kg can cause death in cattle and sheep respectively.
(2) Cats may suffer from mental depression, lethargy, anorexia, etc. at the recommended dose. If used at a dose of 100 mg/kg per day for 2 to 3 weeks, symptoms such as mental retardation, weight loss, and neutropenia will occur.
(3) When dogs are dosed at a dose of 50 mg/kg twice a day, symptoms such as loss of appetite may occur.
(4) Albendazole can also cause aplastic anemia in dogs and cats, and has a certain teratogenic effect.
What are the common dosage forms of albendazole?
Tablets: 0.025g, 0.05g, 0.28, 0.5g.
