Pharmacological Action
Vitamin K₁ is essential for the hepatic synthesis of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X. It participates in the carboxylation that converts these factors from their inactive precursors into their active forms. Vitamin K₁ is fat‑soluble; absorption after oral administration is poor in the absence of bile. Injection produces a more rapid effect than menadione sodium bisulfite.
Action and Use
Hemostatic agent. Used for bleeding caused by vitamin K deficiency.
Dosage and Administration
Intramuscular or intravenous injection: single dose, per 1 kg body weight - calves 0.1 ml; dogs, cats 0.05–0.2 ml.
Adverse Reactions
Intramuscular injection may cause local redness, swelling, and pain.
Precautions
Intravenous injection should be given slowly.
Withdrawal Period
No withdrawal period required.
