Description
This product is a clear liquid, colorless or almost colorless.
Pharmacological Action
Furosemide mainly acts on the medullary thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, inhibiting the reabsorption of Cl⁻ and Na⁺, and also has an effect on the cortical part of the thick ascending limb. As a result, the concentrations of Na⁺ and Cl⁻ in the tubular fluid increase, while their concentrations in the medullary interstitium decrease, reducing the concentrating ability of the renal tubules, leading to increased excretion of water, Na⁺, and Cl⁻. Due to reduced Na⁺ reabsorption, the Na⁺ concentration in the distal tubule increases, promoting Na⁺‑K⁺ and Na⁺‑H⁺ exchange, thereby increasing the excretion of K⁺ and H⁺. In addition, furosemide also inhibits Na⁺ and Cl⁻ reabsorption in the proximal and distal tubules, enhancing Na⁺‑K⁺ exchange in the distal tubule and promoting K⁺ excretion.
Action and Use
Diuretic. Used for various oedematous conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Intramuscular or intravenous injection: single dose, per 1 kg body weight - horses, cattle, sheep, pigs 0.05–0.1 ml; dogs, cats 0.1–0.5 ml.
Adverse Reactions
(1) May induce electrolyte imbalances such as hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, hypocalcaemia, and hypomagnesaemia. In addition, azotaemia may occur in dehydrated animals.
(2) High‑dose intravenous injection may cause hearing loss in dogs.
(3) May also cause gastrointestinal disturbances, anaemia, leukopenia, and weakness.
Precautions
(1) Contraindicated in animals with anuria. Use with caution in animals with electrolyte disturbances or hepatic impairment.
(2) Long‑term, high‑dose administration may cause hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia, and dehydration. This should be managed by concomitant or alternate use with potassium supplements or potassium‑sparing diuretics, and water and electrolyte balance should be monitored regularly.
(3) Concomitant use with aminoglycoside antibiotics and glucocorticoids should be avoided.
Withdrawal Period
No withdrawal period required.
