What is Sulfathiazole Tablets?

Pharmacodynamics: Sulfathiazole is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. It exerts bacteriostatic effects by competing with *p*-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for dihydrofolate synthase, thereby inhibiting folic acid synthesis in susceptible bacteria. It is effective against most Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. Pathogens highly sensitive to sulfathiazole include: Streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Salmonella, Corynebacterium pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and Avibacterium paragallinarum. Generally sensitive pathogens include: Staphylococcus, Proteus, Pasteurella, Clostridium perfringens, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus anthracis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

During clinical use, factors such as insufficient dosage or treatment duration can readily lead to bacterial resistance development, with Staphylococcus being particularly prone, followed by E. coli and Streptococcus. Once bacteria develop resistance to sulfathiazole, varying degrees of cross-resistance to other sulfonamides may occur.

Pharmacokinetics: Sulfathiazole is incompletely absorbed after oral administration. Following absorption, it is rapidly excreted; approximately 90% is eliminated within 24 hours in monogastric animals. It has a short elimination half-life, making it difficult to maintain effective blood concentrations. It undergoes a high degree of acetylation in vivo, and both the parent drug and its metabolites are prone to crystallize in acidic urine.

What is the Physicochemical Properties of Sulfathiazole Tablets?

This product is a white to slightly yellow tablet; color may darken upon exposure to light.

Uses

What is Sulfathiazole Tablets used for?

Sulfonamide antibacterial agent. Used for infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Dosage

How much Sulfathiazole Tablets should be given to an animal?

Oral administration: Single dose: For livestock, initial dose of 28–40 tablets per 100kg body weight, maintenance dose of 14–20 tablets per 100kg body weight. Administer 2–3 times daily for 3–5 consecutive days.

Side Effects

What are the potential side effects of Sulfathiazole Tablets in different animal species?

(1) Renal damage, manifesting as crystalluria, hematuria, and proteinuria.

(2) Suppression of gastrointestinal flora, leading to digestive disorders and multifocal enteritis in herbivores.

(3) Hematopoietic dysfunction, resulting in hemolytic anemia, prolonged coagulation time, and capillary hemorrhage.

(4) Immunosuppression in young animals or poultry, accompanied by hemorrhage and atrophy of immune organs.

What are the common dosage forms of Sulfathiazole Tablets?

0.5g

What are the Precautions of Sulfathiazole Tablets?

(1) Sulfathiazole and its metabolite acetylsulfathiazole have lower water solubility than the parent drug and may crystallize in renal tubules during excretion (especially in acidic urine). Therefore, it should be administered with an appropriate amount of sodium bicarbonate.

(2) Withdrawal period: Livestock: 28 days; Milk discard period: 7 days.
